Telford Homes Celebrates Topping Out at Manhattan Plaza

The ‘topping out’ of Manhattan Plaza, one of Telford Homes’ exclusive city developments located between Canary Wharf and Poplar in East London, took place at the end of February marking the point at which the development reached its highest point.

The commemorative event was attended by representatives from all organisations involved in the project to date, including Telford Homes, Workspace Group, Corbyn Construction, and Powell Tolner Associates, the consultant engineers. The topping out was marked by placing the ‘upstand’, the final piece of concrete.

Designed by Barton Willmore architects, Manhattan Plaza takes its inspiration from the iconic buildings of New York’s trendy Meatpacking District as well as its London surroundings, where the old London market tradition of Billingsgate meets the world financial markets of Canary Wharf.

The building rite of ‘topping out’ a new building originates with the ancient Scandinavian practice of placing a tree atop a new building. Today, a formal ceremony is held to commemorate this milestone in the construction of a building, with all tradesmen and staff involved in the construction joining in the celebration as well as representatives of the architecture and engineering firms.
