TELFORD HOMES CELEBRATES ‘TOPPING OUT’ AT BERMONDSEY WORKS
The ‘topping out’ of Bermondsey Works, Telford Homes’ landmark residential scheme on Rotherhithe New Road, SE16, was recently celebrated, marking the completion of its 60m-high concrete structure.
A special ceremony, held on the sixteenth floor of the building, was attended by representatives of all organisations involved in the project to date, including Telford Homes, Wandle and the architects, Stockwool.
Bermondsey Works will comprise 148 new one, two and three-bedroom apartments. The development will also include a new free school, the fit-out of which is already underway, and The City of London Academy across the first three floors.
Conveniently located for commuters, the development is just an 8 minute and 18 minute walk from South Bermondsey train station and Bermondsey underground station respectively, offering swift and easy access to The City, Canary Wharf and the West End. The Bermondsey area is also set to benefit from improved transport links with the announcement that a new London Overground station will be opening as part of the £1billion ‘New Bermondsey’ regeneration project. The development is also set to benefit from the extension of the Bakerloo Line and two new stations.
The ancient tradition of ‘topping out’ a new building can be traced back thousands of years to the ancient Scandinavian practice of placing a tree atop a new building. Today, a formal ceremony is held to commemorate this milestone in the construction of a building, with all tradesmen and staff involved in the construction of the building joining in the celebration as well as representatives of the architecture and engineering firms.
Jon Di-Stefano, Chief Executive of Telford Homes, comments:
“Bermondsey Works is an exciting scheme for us at Telford Homes and the ‘topping out’ ceremony was a great way to celebrate the project with our partners Wandle and Stockwool. It represents a landmark moment in the development’s construction and work will now continue ready for handovers.”
John Walton, Head of Development at Wandle, said:
“Helping to mark the completion of Bermondsey Works’ structure is really exciting. Wandle is proud to be working with Telford Homes in the delivery of more affordable housing in Bermondsey and it demonstrates our ongoing commitment to working in effective partnership with developers across south London.”
